The Americas Cup and Valencia on the Costa Blanca North

The Americas Cup is set to change the region of Valencia:

Now for the first time in 152 years, the America’s Cup is in Europe.

The 32nd America’s Cup will be held in Valencia Spain in 2007

King Juan Carlos of Spain and Prince Felipe of Asturias (the heir to the Spanish throne) are experienced yachtsmen. Prince Felipe was a member of the Spanish sailing team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Valencia's Real Club Nautico hosts an annual regatta, the Trofeo S.M. La Reina, in honor of Reina Sofía, the Queen of Spain.
There is great anticipation that the Spanish Royal Family and the people of Spain will take a very active part in the promotion and celebration of Valencia and the 2007 Americas Cup and Luis Vuitton Cup.

New Developments in the region of Valencia Costa Blanca North

Forecasts calculate the economic impact of the Valencia region for the 32nd Americas Cup at between 1.3 and 1.5 billion euros, creating approximately 10,000 jobs.

At the previous Americas Cup, in Auckland New Zealand, over 100 television channels provided coverage for the Americas Cup and the Louis Vuitton Cup, broadcasting to 211 territories and 2.9 billion people. Over 1,500 accredited journalists came from a total of 40 countries. More than 50,000 press articles were printed and the Americas Cup website registered over 8 million visits.

The Valencian region's tourist infrastructure is impressive:

  • Valencia is Spain's third largest city, (4,500,000 people)
  • 19 million tourists visit the region every year, mostly from Great Britain, France and Germany (The number of visitors to Valencia in 2003 grew by 16,4% compared to 2002, significantly higher than the 3.7% increase on the overall national level in Spain)
  • Over 500 hotels with 50,000 rooms available
  • Over 30,000 residencies
  • 9,000 restaurants
  • 36 yacht clubs and marinas
  • 21 golf courses
  • This year the European Union has awarded the Valencia region over 106 blue flags, providing official certification to the quality of the beaches and sport marinas of the region

The build-up in Valencia North Costa Blanca started in 2004:

  • Valencia airport runway will be lengthened by half a kilometer
  • Valencia inner harbour, canal and new port facilities
  • The port will be connected to the airport via Metro line No. 5
  • The high-speed AVE train connecting Valencia and Madrid in less than two hours
  • The Central Park project, placing current railway lines underground at the central station and recovering 700,000 square metres of land for the city, with 400,000 dedicated to a new city park
  • An ambitious four-year program of yachting regattas will take place
  • Tax considerations for sponsors and Cup activities are being provided
  • Spanish governmental support

The headquarters of the 32nd Americas Cup will be located in the port of Valencia. This is where the team bases, the Regatta offices, the press centre, the volunteer centre and the Americas Cup village will be situated.
